From Sunrise to the Sea: A Day in My Shoes as an Immigration Lawyer

Morning: Setting the Tone

My day begins early, at 6:00 AM. The very first thing I do is take care of my animals. Feeding them, giving them fresh water, and spending a few minutes of quality time together is not just part of my routine, it’s a moment that brings me peace and a positive start to the day.

Afterwards, I prepare a good cup of coffee and get ready to work, whether from the office or from home. By the time I sit at my desk, my first priority is to review the matters that require my urgent attention. I check emails, messages, and any pending updates that could impact the day ahead. Once I’ve handled anything pressing, I plan my schedule carefully, organizing tasks in order of importance and setting realistic goals to ensure a productive and focused day.

Midday: Listening, Guiding, and Collaborating

Late mornings are often dedicated to meeting with clients. Sometimes it’s their very first consultation, where I outline the legal process, clarify their options, and take the time to truly understand their priorities. Other times, it’s a strategy session with long-standing clients, fine-tuning the next steps in their journey. For me, listening goes beyond hearing the facts, it’s about understanding each story, its context, and the emotions behind it.

I also accompany clients to AIMA for their appointments, making sure they feel supported every step of the way and that the process is as smooth as possible. Witnessing their relief and sense of accomplishment after a key milestone is one of the most gratifying parts of my work.

Collaboration with my team is also essential. Exchanging updates, brainstorming solutions, and offering mutual support not only strengthens our connection but also enhances the quality and efficiency of the service we deliver.

Afternoon: Dynamic Work and Maintaining Momentum

Afternoons are a mix of fieldwork and office tasks. Some days, I’m out meeting clients, attending appointments, or gathering necessary documents; other days, I focus on office-based work such as reviewing cases, preparing reports, and coordinating with colleagues. Every task requires careful attention to detail, as accuracy and organization are essential to keep cases moving smoothly.

Client needs vary greatly, from purchasing property and enrolling in Portuguese language courses for citizenship, to seeking guidance on long-term residency. This diversity keeps the work interesting and ensures that no two days are ever the same.

Recently, one of the biggest challenges has been adapting to the new processes introduced by AIMA, designed to accelerate procedures and address delays. This has involved reaching out to large numbers of clients quickly and providing personalized guidance for each case, a demanding but rewarding task at the start of 2025.

End of Day: Outdoors and Recharging by the Sea

As the day winds down, I like to step away from my desk and spend some quality time outdoors. I take my animals for a walk, enjoying their company and the fresh air, which always helps me unwind. Later, I usually head to the beach to meet my boyfriend, who is often out surfing. Being close to the sea is incredibly energizing for me, the sound of the waves, the ocean breeze, and the sense of calm it brings are the perfect way to recharge after a busy day. These moments allow me to relax, reflect, and return home with renewed focus and energy for the days ahead.

What Makes Immigration Law Special?

I began practicing Immigration Law in 2016, coming from a more bureaucratic and distant environment, working directly with administrative entities. I quickly realized that I have a genuine passion for working with international clients. Being an immigration lawyer often means helping families have a fresh start in a new place, it’s not just about legal procedures, it’s about enabling people to build a new life and realize their dreams.

Born in Porto but now living in Lisbon, I feel I bring a unique perspective. I carry the warmth and hospitality of the North with me, while experiencing the dynamism of the capital every day. Showcasing Portugal’s qualities is a source of pride, contributing to its international reach enriches both the country and the families who choose to make it their home.
