Portugal is taking another step towards the modernization of its public services with the introduction of the automatic assignment of a Social Security Identification Number (NISS) to immigrants who apply to regularize their status through the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA).

The measure will allow foreign nationals to obtain a NISS automatically during their immigration process, eliminating the need for a separate appointment with the Social Security services.

The NISS, an essential requirement for employment, social protection, and various legal and administrative procedures, often represented an additional step that could lead to delays and unnecessary bureaucracy.

The new system results from the integration of AIMA and Social Security databases, enabling the automatic generation of a NISS in real time once the applicant's information is registered. According to the authorities, the objective is to simplify procedures, improve service efficiency, and reduce pressure on in-person service counters.

The measure forms part of a wider digital transformation strategy being implemented by the Portuguese Government, aimed at improving accessibility and streamlining interactions between citizens and public services. By reducing administrative burdens and eliminating duplicate procedures, the initiative is expected to benefit both applicants and public institutions.
