The Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) has taken a further step in the digitalization of Portugal's immigration services with the launch of a new online tool that allows applicants to consult the status of their residence permit applications and renewals.

Until now, applicants had limited visibility over the progress of their processes, often depending on formal enquiries or legal follow-up to obtain updates. The new platform aims to address this by providing direct access to case status information, representing a welcome step towards greater transparency in the relationship between AIMA and applicants.

At IAS, our legal team has already tested the platform with several client cases. From this initial experience, two common scenarios have emerged. In the first, the application appears as approved, but the residence card has not yet been issued — meaning the decision has been taken, while the physical card remains pending production and delivery. In the second, the platform displays an analysis error or incomplete information. At this stage, it is not yet clear whether these messages reflect genuine issues with the application or simply technical limitations of a system still being rolled out.

It is important to note that, while this new feature gives applicants greater visibility over their cases, it does not accelerate the processing or issuance of residence permits.

As the platform is still in its early stages, the information displayed should be interpreted with caution, and statuses may change or display inconsistently while the system stabilizes.
